Lawmakers tell tourism group SC casinos unlikely

State lawmakers have told tourism leaders the prospects are unlikely for casino gambling in South Carolina.

The lawmakers appeared Monday on a panel at the Governor's Conference on Tourism and Travel in Greenville.

State Sen. Ronnie Cromer of Prosperity said while supporters say casinos would mean jobs and visitors the idea is not likely to pass in South Carolina. Goose Creek Sen. Paul Campbell says there is already gambling in the state with the lottery but the chances for a casino are not good.

There is currently a proposal for a casino and resort hotel near Hardeeville.

Gov. Nikki Haley addresses the meeting Tuesday with tourism director Duane Parrish reviewing his first year in office Wednesday.

Tourism means $14 billion for the state's economy.
