Mississippi to use $1.8M from BP funds on project

A new $2 million Pascagoula River Audubon Center celebrating the environment of the Mississippi Gulf Coast is scheduled to open in early 2013.

The center, one of just 43 such Audubon centers across the country, will be located within walking distance of downtown Moss Point.

Audubon President David Yarnold says the center will be located on a 10-acre site that borders a bayou just off the river. The center will include a 4,000-square-foot multipurpose facility and walking trails.

Funding for construction and operation of the center is being provided by several resources, including the state of Mississippi which is committing $1.8 million in unspent money that BP provided following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
