Summary Box: US auto sales rise in January

JANUARY SALES: U.S. auto sales rose 11 percent in January from the same month a year ago, continuing their brisk pace from the end of 2011.

WINNERS AND LOSERS: Chrysler's sales were up 44 percent on strong demand for its new sedans, and Volkswagen's sales were up 48 percent. General Motors was the only major automaker whose sales fell, partly because it inflated last January's sales with a flurry of discounts.

WHAT'S AHEAD: Analysts say improved Japanese inventories and strong new products could help boost U.S. sales to 14 million this year, their highest level since 2007.
