A jury pool has been chosen for the trial of a class-action lawsuit that seeks medical monitoring for Nitro residents near a former Monsanto Co. chemical plant.
State Supreme Court spokeswoman Jennifer Bundy said Wednesday that a pool of 28 jurors has been picked for the trial in Putnam County Circuit Court.
Bundy says Judge Derek Swope must consider numerous pretrial motions and has adjourned the trial until at least Feb. 13.
Swope is a Mercer County circuit judge who was appointed by the Supreme Court to preside over the trial after Putnam County Circuit Judge O.C. Spaulding stepped aside. Spaulding has been diagnosed with ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease.
The lawsuit alleges Monsanto unsafely dispersed dioxin, exposing residential properties and streams to unsafe levels of the toxic chemical.
