Strong corporate earnings reports and the lowest unemployment claims in almost four years gave investors more reasons to take risks on stocks Thursday, and the market continued its quiet but solid January climb.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 45.03 points, or 0.4 percent, to close at 12,623.98.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 6.46 points, or 0.5 percent, to 1,314.50.
The Nasdaq composite index added 18.62 points, or 0.7 percent, to 2,788.33.
For the week:
The Dow is up 201.92, or 1.6 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 25.41, or 2 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 77.66, or 2.9 percent.
For the year to date:
The Dow is up 406.42, or 3.3 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 56.90 points, or 4.5 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 183.18 points, or 7 percent.
