Mayor announces Salt Lake City airport overhaul

Mayor Ralph Becker says Salt Lake City is ready to demolish and rebuild its airport to make it more earthquake-proof and accommodate its role as an emerging regional hub.

Becker announced at his Tuesday State of the City address deals have been reached with major airlines to fund the $1.8 billion rebuilding. Design work is expected to start over the summer, and construction would happen in phases over at least eight years.

Seismic upgrades are a major motivation for the overhaul, but officials say they also want to make the airport efficient for the more than 21 million passengers who use it every year.

Airport spokeswoman Barbara Gann says the project wouldn't require taxpayer dollars and would be funded through passenger charges, rental car fees and contributions from airline companies.
