Ky. gets additional $9.5M for home heating program

Kentucky's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program has received an additional $9.5 million to help the state's poor stay warm through the winter.

Gov. Steve Beshear announced the additional funding Thursday, saying the financial help is critical at this time of year.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is providing the funding to help low-income families heat their homes.

Kentucky's total funding for the fiscal year is $46.4 million.

The money is disbursed by community action agencies across the state. Families can apply through March 31 unless funding runs out before that.
