A Rhode Island woman has been accused of stealing more than $400,000 from a Catholic nonprofit where she worked as a bookkeeper.
State police say 51-year-old Cheryl Bibeau, of East Providence, was arrested on warrants for larceny and forgery Wednesday after she was pulled over for an expired inspection sticker.
Authorities allege Bibeau used 565 fraudulent checks to steal more than $400,000 from the Johnston-based North American Catholic Educational Programming Foundation between 2007 and April 2010.
The foundation's lawyer says the group provides educational and religious programming. It also uses revenue generated by the communications licenses it owns to award grants to other nonprofits.
Authorities say Bibeau confessed to the theft. She is free on bail.
A telephone number for Bibeau has been disconnected.
