A western Pennsylvania family has been living with no natural gas service as a precaution while the state Department of Environmental Protection tries to curb methane leaking near their home from an abandoned mine.
Ashley and Luke Raynovich live in West Deer Township, with their two children, about 20 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. The DEP ordered their gas service shut off on Tuesday after elevated levels of methane were found within four feet of the couple's home. State regulations require gas service be shut off as a precaution whenever elevated methane levels are detected within 10 feet of a home.
The couple is staying in the home and using space heaters while the DEP figures out a way to vent to methane from their property and locate the abandoned mine's owner.
