Montana horse racing official suspended with pay

The executive secretary of the Montana Board of Horse Racing is on paid administrative leave.

Department of Livestock executive secretary Christian Mackay told Lee Newspapers of Montana that Ryan Sherman was placed on indefinite leave.

Sherman told The Associated Press on Monday that it wasn't a disciplinary action, according to the letter he received last week.

Horse racing in Montana has faced major financial problems for years. Gov. Brian Schweitzer appointed a three-member business advisory council to make suggestions to the governor and the board.

MacKay says the council has made some preliminary recommendations that the Board of Horse Racing adopted.

Sherman says he supports the efforts of the governor and the council in trying to come up with solutions to keep horse racing going in Montana.
