Summary Box: Countries vow to back online freedoms

FREEDOM IN CYBERSPACE: Fourteen countries including the U.S. vowed said at the end of a two-day conference in the Netherlands that they will work to promote online freedoms, with an emphasis on helping bloggers who operate under oppressive regimes.

INSPIRATION: The conference was inspired in part by the bloggers and social network users who played a key role in fomenting the revolutions in the Middle East this year.

FIRST ACTION: the Dutch government pledged $1.3 million to develop "mesh" networks of smartphones to operate as a backup system to disseminate information when governments try to block the Internet or social networks. Syria, Iran and Zimbabwe were named as target countries.
