How the major stock indexes fared on Monday

A weekend of exuberant holiday shopping in the U.S. and proposals for a far-reaching solution to Europe's debt crisis sent stocks soaring Monday. The Standard & Poor's 500 index broke a seven-day losing streak.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 291.23 points, or 2.6 percent, to 11,523.01.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 33.88, or 2.9 percent, to 1,192.55.

The Nasdaq composite index rose 85.83, or 3.5 percent, to 2,527.34.

For the year to date:

The Dow is down 54.50, or 0.5 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 65.09, or 5.2 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 125.53, or 4.7 percent.
