FAMILY: Married Diana Strassmann in 1983. She's a professor at Rice University, teaching feminist economics. They have two sons.
PARENTS: Father was a career Air Force officer and a B-29 bomber pilot in WWII. Mother was a big band singer.
CAREER: Joined the law firm of Vinson & Elkins in 1983 and made partner in 1990. He left in 1995 to join Continental Airlines as general counsel. In December 2004, he became president of the airline and then president and chief operating officer in September 2008. Smisek was named chief executive officer of Continental in January 2010. When Continental and United merged in October 2010, he became CEO of the combined airline.
