Summary Box: Stocks soar on European debt deal

BIG DAY: News that European leaders reached a deal on how to contain that region's debt crisis sent the Dow Jones industrial average surging 339 points, its biggest one-day jump since Aug. 11. It closed at 12,208, the first close above 12,000 since Aug. 1.

BIG MONTH: With two trading days left in October, the Dow is headed for its biggest one-month gain since 1987. If the S&P 500 closes October where it is now, it will be the biggest month for that index since 1974.

COMMODITIES, BOND YIELDS: Both rose sharply as investors took on more risk. Copper jumped 5.8 percent, oil 4.2 percent. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note spiked to 2.39 percent from 2.21 percent.
