How states fared on unemployment aid, at a glance

Weekly unemployment applications fell by 6,000 to a seasonally adjusted 403,000 last week, the Labor Department said Thursday.

Here are the states with the biggest increases and decreases in applications for the week ended Oct. 8. The state data are one week behind the national figures:

States with the biggest increases:

California: Up 13,882, due to layoffs in the service industry

New York: Up 8,568, due to layoffs in transportation, services and public administration

Texas: Up 4,644, due to layoffs in manufacturing, services and retail

Washington: Up 3,728, due to layoffs in construction, retail and educational services

Georgia: Up 3,605 due to layoffs in services and manufacturing

Florida: Up 2,507, due to layoffs in agriculture, construction, manufacturing, trade, retail and services

Ohio: Up 2,462, due to layoffs in the auto industry

Alabama: Up 1,941, due to layoffs in transportation and services

Missouri: Up 1,822, due to layoffs in manufacturing and services

Indiana: Up 1,813, due to layoffs in manufacturing

States with the biggest drops:

Wisconsin: Down 1,536, no reason given
