BAD WEEK: The Dow Jones industrial average lost 6.4 percent for the week, its biggest drop since the week that ended Oct. 10, 2008, when it fell 18 percent.
COMMODITIES: Commodities from soybeans to metals sank on Friday. Gold dropped 5.9 percent, copper lost 6 percent and silver 17.7 percent.
THE INDEXES: The Dow rose 37.65 points, or 0.4 percent, to close at 10,771.48. The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index rose 0.6 percent to end at 1,136.43. The Nasdaq composite added 1.1 percent to finish at 2,483.23 on Friday.
