Bridgestone Americas Inc. says it's spending nearly $900 million to build a new plant in South Carolina's Aiken County.
The company also said Wednesday that it's boosting the size of a previously announced expansion of an existing plant nearby. All told, the company has pledged to invest $1.2 billion in the projects and create more than 850 jobs by 2020. The announcement represents the largest-ever initial capital investment by a company in South Carolina.
Bridgestone says it will build its new 1.5 million-square-foot radial tire plant in phases, plus expand its existing light truck tire plant by 474,000 square feet.
The new plant will create giant tires used in mining equipment that can measure 12 feet in diameter.
The value of the announcement eclipses Boeing's promise in 2009 to bring $750 million to the state.
