TWO WHOLE DAYS: Stocks closed higher for the second day in a row. It was the first back-to-back gain since the last week of August.
SUDDEN QUIET: Trading was calm compared with the many wild swings the market has had since early August. The Dow average traded in a range of just 153 points, the narrowest since July 26.
BEST BUY: Best Buy Co. plunged 6.4 percent to $23.35, the biggest loss of any S&P 500 stock, after the electronic retailer reported a fall in quarterly profit. Sales in stores open a year or longer dropped 2.8 percent.
