Stocks closed higher for the second day in a row, led by gains in General Electric Co. and other industrial companies. GE rose the most of the 30 stocks in the Dow Jones industrial average, 2.6 percent. Cummins Inc., an engine maker, topped the S&P 500 with a 6 percent gain.
It was the third time the market closed higher this month and the first back-to-back gain since the last week of August.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 44.73 points, or 0.4 percent, to close at 11,105.85.
The S&P 500 rose 10.60, or 0.9 percent, to 1,172.87.
The Nasdaq gained 37.06, or 1.5 percent, to 2,532.15.

The Dow is up 113.72 points, or 1 percent.
The S&P 500 index is up 18.64, or 1.6 percent.
The Nasdaq composite index is up 64.16 points, or 2.6 percent.
For the year to date:
The Dow is down 471.66, or 4.1 percent.
The S&P 500 is down 84.77, or 6.7 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 120.72, or 4.6 percent.
