Summary Box: Gold up as Bernanke silent on options

GOLD RALLIES: Gold prices rose after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke offered no new insights about what steps the policymakers may take to help the sluggish economy. Bernanke's comments came ahead of a two-day meeting later this month where the Fed is expected to consider a range of options to help stimulate growth.

UNEMPLOYMENT NEWS: Gold also benefited from a new government report that showed applications for unemployment benefits rose last week.

MIXED BAG: Metals rose. Wheat, corn and soybeans fell, and energy contracts were mixed.
