Summary Box: Feds join whistleblower case

WHISTLEBLOWER SUIT: The federal government joins in a lawsuit accusing three generic drugmakers of overcharging Medicaid by tens of millions of dollars.

THE DEFENDANTS: Par Pharmaceuticals Companies Inc. of Woodcliff Lake, N.J., and partners Alphapharm PTY Ltd. of Australia and Canada's Genpharm ULC are accused of defrauding the federal and state governments.

THE CLAIM: Lawyers for Chicago pharmacist Bernard Lisitza say the three companies got pharmacies to dispense different, more-expensive, dosage forms than what was prescribed, boosting taxpayer costs by up to five times.
