Ford Motor Co.'s U.S. sales rose 11 percent in August as sales of the Ford Explorer SUV more than tripled from a year earlier.
Sales of the Ford Fiesta small car jumped 76 percent. Sales of the Crown Victoria sedan surged 140 percent as police departments and taxi companies scrambled to get the car before Ford ends its production.
Ford was one of several automakers who surprised the industry Thursday with double-digit sales increases. General Motors' August sales were up 18 percent, while Nissan's rose 19 percent.
One disappointment for Ford was a 9 percent drop in sales of the new Focus sedan because of low inventory and production problems.
