How states fared on unemployment aid applications

Thousands of striking Verizon workers drove up the number of people seeking unemployment benefits last week to its highest level in a month. But excluding the impact of the strikers, layoffs appear to have stabilized, easing fears the economy could slip into another recession. Weekly applications rose 5,000 to 417,000 last week, the Labor Department said Thursday.

Below are the states with the biggest increases and decreases in applications. The data is for the week that ended Aug. 13, which is one week behind the national data:

States with the biggest increases:

New York: Up 5,047, due to layoffs in services industries

Massachusetts: Up 2,499, no reason given

New Jersey: Up 2,223, due to layoffs in services

States with the biggest drops:

California: Down 10,912, due to fewer layoffs in services

Texas: Down 1,690, no reason given

Minnesota: Down 1,061, no reason given
