Investors were picking up beaten-down stocks Tuesday after fears that the U.S. would slip into a recession pounded the market over the last month. The Dow jumped 322 points. That's its best day since it jumped 423 points Aug. 11. It dipped about 60 points shortly after an earthquake hit the East Coast at 1:51 p.m., but recovered within 20 minutes.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 322.11 points, or 3 percent, to close at 11,176.76.
The S&P 500 rose 38.53 points, or 3.4 percent, to 1,162.35.
The Nasdaq rose 100.68 points, or 4.3 percent, to 2,446.06.
For the week:
The Dow is up 359.11, or 3.3 percent
The S&P 500 is up 38.82, or 3.5 percent
The Nasdaq is up 104.22, or 4.5 percent
For the year to date:
The Dow is down 400.75, or 3.5 percent.
The S&P 500 is down 95.29, or 7.6 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 206.81, or 7.8 percent.
