STREAK BROKEN: The Dow Jones industrial average eked out a gain of 30 points Wednesday, breaking an eight-day losing streak.
NEAR MISS: The last time the Dow average had nine straight days of declines was February 1978, when Jimmy Carter was still in the White House. The 1976-78 bear market was about to end at that time.
INDEXES: The Dow finished up 0.3 percent at 11,896. The S&P 500 index rose 0.5 percent to 1,260. The S&P had been down for seven straight days through Tuesday.
