How the major stock indexes fared Wednesday

The Dow ended a volatile day with small gains Wednesday to avoid a losing streak not seen since Jimmy Carter was president. The Dow Jones industrial rose 30 points to break an eight-day losing streak. The Dow was down as much as 166 points just after 10:40 a.m Eastern time. A ninth day of losses would have been the longest for the blue-chip index since February 1978. Markets have fallen recently because investors are becoming increasingly worried about the U.S. economy.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 29.82 points, or 0.3 percent, to 11,896.44.

The Standard and Poor's 500 index rose 6.29, or 0.5 percent, to 1,260.34.

The Nasdaq composite rose 23.83, or 0.9 percent, to 2,693.07.

For the week to date:

The Dow is down 246.80, or 2 percent.

The S&P is down 31.94, or 2.5 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 63.31, or 2.3 percent.

For the year to date:

The Dow is up 318.93, or 2.8 percent.

The S&P is up 2.70, or 0.2 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 40.20, or 1.5 percent.
