Summary Box: Dow ends lower after a day big swings

BIG SWINGS: The Dow started the day up nearly 140 points after President Obama and congressional leaders said Sunday that a deal had been reached to raise the nation's borrowing limit and avoid a default on U.S. debt. It later lost as many as 145 points on a weak manufacturing report, only to end the day with a loss of just 11 points.

MANUFACTURING: A surprisingly weak manufacturing report erased the market's gains at midmorning. Stocks gradually pared those losses in the afternoon.

INDEXES: The Dow ended with a loss of 10.75 points, or 0.1 percent, at 12,132.49. The S&P 500 index lost 0.4 percent to 1,286.94. The Nasdaq fell 0.4 percent to 2,744.61.
