How the major stock indexes fared Friday

Stocks continued a weeklong slide after a dismal report on economic growth added to growing concerns that the federal government may default on its bond payments. Major indexes erased some of their early losses on Friday after President Barack Obama said there were many paths to a compromise on raising the debt limit.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 96.87 points, or 0.8 percent, to close at 12,143.24.

The Standard and Poor's 500 index lost 8.39 points, or 0.6 percent, to 1,292.28.

The Nasdaq composite fell 9.87, or 0.4 percent, to 2,756.38

For the week:

The Dow is down 537.92 points, or 4.2 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 52.74 points, or 3.9 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 102.45 points, or 3.6 percent.

For the year to date:

The Dow is up 565.73, or 4.9 percent.

The S&P is up 34.64, or 2.8 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 103.51, or 3.9 percent.
