BY THE NUMBERS: Norfolk Southern Corp. reported net income of $557 million, $1.56 per share, which it said was a record for the April-to-June quarter. Railway operating revenue rose to $2.87 billion from $2.43 billion.
BUSINESS GAINS: The company benefited from improving revenue in shipments of coal, general merchandise, which includes consumer goods and intermodal business, which is transfers between trucks and trains. The gains offset higher expenses, including a 60 percent jump in fuel costs.
GROWING TREND: It joins Union Pacific and CSX in recording stronger second-quarter results.
