Nissan raises price of Leaf, expands ordering

Nissan Motor Co. is raising the price of the Leaf electric car.

The base price of the 2012 model-year Leaf will be $35,200, up nearly $2,500 from the 2011 model year. Drivers can also lease the Leaf for $369 per month, up $19.

The 2012 Leaf goes on sale this fall.

The company is also expanding the territory where people can order the Leaf. Starting next week, Nissan is adding Washington, D.C., the state of Illinois and eight southeastern states, including North Carolina. The company plans to add 12 more states by the end of this year, including New York.

Until now, the Leaf was only available in six states.

Nissan has sold 4,200 Leafs since the car went on sale late last year.
