AP Source: GM to announce Flint factory investment

General Motors Co. will invest millions in its Flint, Mich., assembly plant so it can make the next generation of pickup trucks there, a person briefed on the matter said Friday.

GM has scheduled a news conference at the factory on Monday morning to make the announcement. The company said Friday that its head of labor relations, union officials and local politicians are scheduled to attend.

The person, who asked not to be identified because the announcement has not been made public, did not know exactly how much money would be spent on the plant. The factory will get new equipment to make the new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups

GM expects to roll out all-new versions of the Silverado and Sierra pickups early in 2013.

A message was left Friday afternoon for GM spokeswoman Kim Carpenter.

The investment is unlikely to create any new jobs at the plant, which has about 2,100 hourly and salaried workers and is in the process of adding a third shift to run around the clock. The new shift, with 750 workers, starts on Aug. 7 and was added to meet demand for heavy-duty versions of the pickup trucks.

The Flint factory made 115,000 trucks last year. GM also makes pickups at factories in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Silao, Mexico.
