BERNANKE: Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke told Congress the central bank would be open to new economic stimulus measures, but only if the economy gets much worse. The Dow Jones industrial average jumped as much as 1.3 percent, but closed with a gain of just 0.4 percent.
HOPES FADE: Most of the gains evaporated after Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas President Richard Fisher said in a speech that the Fed had already "pressed the limits of monetary policy."
CHINA GROWTH: Signs of healthy growth in China also helped push stocks higher. China's economy grew 9.5 percent last quarter.
