How the major stock indexes fared Tuesday

A late-day downgrade of Ireland's debt by Moody's sent stocks sharply lower Tuesday and erased the day's gains. Moody's knocked Ireland's government bond rating down to junk status shortly before U.S. markets closed, saying the country, which has already received a bailout, would likely need another rescue.

The Dow Jones industrial average lost 58.88, or 0.5 percent, to 12,446.88.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 5.85, or 0.4 percent, to 1,313.64.

The Nasdaq composite fell 20.71, or 0.7 percent, to 2,781.91.

For the week to date:

The Dow is down 210.32, or 1.7 percent.

The S&P is 30.16, or 2.2 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 77.90, or 2.7 percent.

For the year to date:

The Dow is up 869.37, or 7.5 percent.

The S&P is up 56, or 4.5 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 129.04, or 4.9 percent.
