Insurer Aegon pays back state aid

Aegon NV, a Netherlands-based insurer that has the bulk of its operations in the United States, says it has repaid the remaining euro750 million ($1.08 billion) in aid it received from the Dutch state during the 2008 financial crisis.

In all, Aegon got euro3 billion and repaid euro4.1 million in principle and interest.

In a statement Wednesday, the company _ owner of the Transamerica brand _ thanked the Dutch government for its support, and its customers for their "continued confidence."

Aegon has sold or closed other operations to focus on insurance, asset management, and retirement services.
