Stocks were lower for a fourth straight day. Banks and energy companies led the decline. Continued concerns about a slowing economy also weighed on the broader market.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 61.30 points, or 0.5 percent, to 12,089.96.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index dropped 13.99 points, or 1.1 percent, to 1,286.17.
The Nasdaq composite fell 30.22, or 1.1 percent, to 2,702.56.

The Dow is up 512.45, or 4.4 percent.
The S&P is up 28.53, or 2.3 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 49.69, or 1.9 percent.
