How the major stock indexes fared Tuesday

New hopes for a deal to prevent Greece from defaulting on its debts led the stock market to end a down month on an up note Tuesday. An unexpected drop in consumers' confidence in the U.S. economy kept the gains in check. The stock market finished broadly higher. All 10 industries that make up the Standard and Poor's 500 index rose.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 128.21 points, or 1 percent, to 12,569.79.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 14.10 points, or 1.1 percent, to 1,345.20.

The Nasdaq composite rose 38.44 points, or 1.4 percent, to 2,835.30.

For the year to date:

The Dow is up 992.28, or 8.6 percent.

The S&P is up 87.56, or 7.0 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 182.43, or 6.9 percent.
