McClatchy promotes Kansas City Star publisher

The president and publisher of The Kansas City Star, has been promoted to vice president of operations of the newspaper's parent firm.

The McClatchy Co. announced the promotion of Mark Zieman Wednesday and says it will be effective at the end of the month.

Zieman is a 50-year-old Kansas native who grew up in Kansas City and has been at The Star since 1986, when he was hired as an investigative reporter. He has held several positions, becoming president and publisher in 2008.

In his new job Zieman will move to Sacramento, Calif., to oversee 13 of McClatchy's daily newspapers, including The Star. He'll also oversee affiliated operations in seven states.

A search is under way for a new publisher for The Star.
