COMMODITIES: Commodities recovered some of their losses from last week, helping energy and materials companies that have enjoyed higher profits as prices for raw materials like oil and corn rise.
FINANCIALS DIP: Financial companies were the only industry group to fall. Citigroup fell 2.7 percent on its first day of trading after completing a one-for-ten reverse split that drastically increased its share price by lowering the number of available shares.
THE INDEXES: The Dow Jones industrial average gained 46 points to close at 12,685. The S&P 500 index rose 6 to 1,346. The Nasdaq rose 16 to 2,843.
