Commerce official: Colombia Free Trade this year

The U.S. Commerce undersecretary for international trade says he is confident the Colombian Free Trade Agreement can happen this year.

Undersecretary Francisco Sanchez told The Associated Press on Friday during a trip to Miami that the Obama administration is pleased with the recent steps the Colombian government has taken to address concerns over the high rates of violence involving labor leaders and union members.

Sanchez declined to give a specific date but reiterated the administration's commitment to getting the agreement through Congress. Sanchez was in Florida to discuss the proposed agreement with local businesses and to tour Port Everglades, which is participating in the president's National Export Initiative to help create new jobs and double U.S. exports over the next five years.
