Stocks jumped to their highest levels in nearly three years Tuesday thanks to signs that earnings are rising for U.S. companies and consumers are feeling more confident about the economy.
The Dow Jones industrial average added 115.49 points, or 0.9 percent, to 12,595.37.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 11.99, or 0.9 percent, to 1,347.24.
The Nasdaq composite rose 21.66, or 0.8 percent, to 2,847.54
For the week:
The Dow is up 89.38, or 0.7 percent.
The S&P is up 9.86, or 0.7 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 27.38, or 1 percent.
For the year to date:
The Dow is up 1,017.86, or 8.8 percent.
The S&P is up 89.60, or 7.1 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 194.67, or 7.3 percent.
