WEAK EARNINGS: Kimberly-Clark, the maker of Kleenex and Huggies, dropped 2.7 percent after missing earnings estimates. The company also lowered its earnings forecast for the full year. Johnson Controls fell 2.8 percent, after saying it expects revenue to drop by $500 million in the third quarter because of the earthquake in Japan.
RISING PRICES: Investors said rising commodity costs were making investors cautious. Kimberly-Clark said it plans to raise prices to offset higher costs.
THE INDEXES: The Dow fell 26 points to close at 12,479. The S&P 500 fell 2 to 1,335. The Nasdaq rose 5 to 2,825.
