J&J LEADS: Johnson & Johnson rose 3.7 percent, leading the 30 companies in the Dow Jones industrial average. The health care giant reported earnings that beat Wall Street's expectations.
BANK EARNINGS: Zions Bancorporation rose 3.9 percent, the most of any company in the Standard & Poor's 500 index. The Utah bank reported a first-quarter profit after posting a loss a year ago. Goldman Sachs fell 1.9 percent after first-quarter income sank 72 percent.
THE INDEXES: The Dow rose 65.16 points to close at 12,266.75. The S&P 500 rose 7.48 to 1,312.62. The Nasdaq rose 9.59 to 2,744.97.
