India revamping safety of its nuclear plants

A top government official says India is revamping safety features at nuclear plants across the country to prevent the chances of a crisis like the one unfolding in Japan.

Shreyans K. Jain says four assessment teams have conducted safety inspections at India's 20 nuclear power plants and have made several recommendations about how to handle an extended loss of power like one suffered by Japan's Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear complex in the wake of a massive earthquake and tsunami.

Jain said Thursday that nuclear authorities plan to install additional new technologies that ensure automatic shutdown of the plants on sensing seismic activity.

India plans to spend $175 billion over the next two decades to expand its nuclear energy market.
