Technology stocks rose Wednesday after the CEO of Cisco Systems Inc. promised to take "bold steps" to narrow the company's focus. Cisco rose 5 percent, the most of any stock in the Dow Jones industrial average. Materials and energy companies fell.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 32.85, or 0.3 percent, to 12,426.75.
The S&P 500 rose 2.91, or 0.2 percent, to 1,335.54.
The Nasdaq composite rose 8.63, or 0.3 percent, to 2,799.82.
For the week:
The Dow is up 50.03, or 0.4 percent.
The S&P is up 3.13, or 0.2 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 10.22, or 0.4 percent.
For the year to date:
The Dow is up 849.24, or 7.3 percent.
The S&P is up 77.90, or 6.2 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 146.95, or 5.5 percent.
