QUIET DAY: The broad stock market rose less than 0.1 percent on the first day of the last full week before the next earnings season begins. Trading volume was light as investors waited to see how rising oil and commodity prices have affected company's margins.
OIL HITS NEW HIGH: Oil closed at a 30-month high of $108 a barrel.
THE INDEXES: The Dow Jones industrial average gained 23.31, or 0.2 percent, to 12,400.03. The S&P 500 rose less than a point to 1,332.87. The Nasdaq composite fell less than a point to 2,789.19.
