How the major stock indexes fared Thursday

Stocks were mixed Thursday as the price of oil jumped to a 30-month high. Slightly disappointing reports on unemployment claims and factory orders also weighed on the market. The Dow Jones industrial average still closed its best start to the year since 1999, rising 6.4 percent in the first three months.

The Dow Jones industrial average lost 30.88 points, or 0.3 percent, to 12,319.73.

The S&P 500 fell 2.43 points, or 0.2 percent, to 1,325.83.

The Nasdaq composite rose 4.28, or 0.2 percent, to 2,781.07.

For the week:

The Dow is up 99.14 points, or 0.8 percent.

The S&P index is up 12.03, or 0.9 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 38.01, or 1.4 percent.

For the year to date:

The Dow is up 742.22, or 6.4 percent.

The S&P is up 68.19, or 5.4 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 128.20, or 4.8 percent.
