Stocks finished broadly higher Tuesday after consumer confidence fell less than some analysts had feared. All 10 company groups that make up the S&P 500 index rose by more than 0.3 percent.
The Dow Jones industrial average gained 81.13 points, or 0.7 percent, to 12,279.01.
The S&P 500 rose 9.25 points, or 0.7 percent, to 1,319.44.
The Nasdaq composite rose 26.21, or 1 percent, to 2,756.89.
For the week:
The Dow is up 58.42 points, or 0.5 percent.
The S&P index is up 5.64, or 0.4 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 13.83, or 0.5 percent.
For the year to date:
The Dow is up 701.50, or 6.1 percent.
The S&P is up 61.80, or 4.9 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 104.02, or 3.9 percent.
