Stocks rose for the third straight day Friday, capping the best week for the Dow Jones industrial average since July. The government said the economy grew at a 3.1 percent annual rate in the fourth quarter of 2010. That's slightly better than economists expected and higher than the estimate made last month.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 50.03 points, or 0.4 percent, to 12,220.59.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 4.14, or 0.3 percent, to 1,313.80.
The Nasdaq composite index rose 6.64 points, or 0.2 percent, to 2,743.06.
For the week:
The Dow is up 362.07, or 3.1 percent
The S&P 500 is up 34.60, or 2.7 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 99.39, or 3.8 percent.
For the year to date:
The Dow is up 643.08, or 5.6 percent.
The S&P is up 56.16 or 4.5 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 90.19, or 3.4 percent.
