How the major stock indexes fared Tuesday

Stocks edged lower Tuesday, ending a three-day rally that had lifted the Dow Jones industrial average above 12,000 for the first time since an earthquake hit Japan more than a week ago.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 17.90 points to close at 12,018.63.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 4.61, or 0.4 percent, to 1,293.77.

The Nasdaq composite index fell 8.22, or 0.3 percent, to 2,683.87

For the week:

The Dow is up 160.11, or 1.4 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 14.57, or 1.1 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 40.20, or 1.5 percent.

For the year to date:

The Dow is up 441.12, or 3.8 percent.

The S&P is up 36.13 or 2.9 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 31, or 1.2 percent.
