Ford says its U.S. sales rose 10 percent in February, led by strong sales of the new Ford Explorer.
Explorer sales were double what they were last February. Ford says it has only a two weeks' supply of the SUVs on hand. A two-month supply is more typical.
Ford Motor Co. said it saw more individual buyers choosing subcompact and compact cars as gas prices rose. But pickup sales also rose 14 percent as small businesses replaced their aging fleets. The Lincoln luxury brand continues to struggle, with sales down 11 percent.
Ford has two fewer brands than it had last year. The company stopped producing its Mercury brand last month and sold no Mercurys in February. It sold its Volvo brand last summer.
